An Overview of Nuclear Engineering

The
Nuclear and Radiation
engineering field is concerned with the applications of nuclear processes in various technologies.

Applications of nuclear processes are fundamental in the medical diagnosis and treatment fields, accelerator, laser, nuclear fission and radioactive thermal power generators. It also includes industrial applications of radiations such as the measurements and control of industrial processes in hostile or hazardous environments. Hydrology, irrigation, and environmental monitoring are other fields in which nuclear processes have pronounced use.

Nuclear engineers are therefore concerned with gaining expertise in the design and development of fission reactors, fusion energy, developing technical options for radioactive waste and nuclear materials management, and in fostering research in nuclear science and applications, with emphasis on detection and instrumentation and environmental science.


The History of the Nuclear and Radiation Engineering Department


The Nuclear and Radiation Engineering Department
(Previously the Nuclear Engineering Department) was established in 1964 in timing with the start of the Atomic Energy Authority in Anshas to introduce Egypt to the nuclear processes and technologies.

The late Prof. Dr. Abdelsamea Mostafa, initiated the idea of establishing the department and pushed through until it was realized.

The average number of graduates from the department each year is 20.

The total number of graduates from 1967 to 2005 is about 700. Most of the department graduates work for institutions in Egypt in the Arab world. Many work in universities and other international institutions around the world.

To cope with the international trend in nuclear engineering education, the Nuclear Engineering Department, developed a new curriculum and changed its name to the Nuclear and Radiation Engineering Department in 2003.
