An Overview of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department
In 1961, the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering was established at the Faculty of Engineering. It graduated its first class in 1964. Before that, it was a branch in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
It was the first such department in Egypt and in the Arab world.
Many of the department’s graduates now hold prominent positions in the marine field in Egypt and other countries.
The department currently employs 20 faculty members with research interests including: ship structural design, ship hydrodynamics, marine engineering and offshore engineering.
The fields of study covered by the department include courses in different areas to familiarize the student with the various ship and offshore structure design and operation considerations.
Courses taught include: basic sciences courses such as: mathematics and mechanics; engineering courses such as: ship drawing, fluid mechanics, computer programming, material technology and electrical engineering; as well as applied and design courses such as: ship design, ship structural design, marine propulsion plants and offshore engineering; in addition to humanities courses such as engineering economy, industrial safety, and maritime law and insurance.
The department graduates are capable of working in various areas: shipbuilding and repair yards, design offices, shipping companies, port authorities, naval forces, Suez Canal Authority, inland navigation companies, ship classification societies as well as working in the field of maintenance and operation of machines and equipment in hotels especially floating Nile hotels. In addition, the department’s graduates may work in petroleum companies and insurance companies.
The Goals of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department are briefly
To provide advanced education and graduate engineers qualified to work successfully in the marine field.
To raise the level of education in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture to enable the department to measure up to similar departments in international universities from the viewpoint of quality of the graduates.
